An addition to my (only very) occasional series on my favorite research tools...recently Our Awesome Library purchased access to a truly marvelous thing called the 19th Century U.S. Newspapers Database. Think lots of newspapers. Think full text access. Think PDF files. Then smile.
This morning as I worked through a large volume of materials gathered from said database by FabulousRA, I came across this little item. Unrelated to anything I'm working on, but of (prurient) interest nonetheless:
A crazy couple are in jail in Illinois, because of an unpleasant monomania for burning their houses and clothes and living in the woods in a state of nature.
[Bangor Daily Whig and Courier (Bangor, Maine), May 8, 1869]
"A crazy couple..." I love 19th c. journalism. And what a great database--I could see using that someday.

Maybe they were hoping to become the 38th state? Now that would be a naked truth!

I like the "unpleasant monomania" bit. As if monomania is ever "pleasant"?
