Yesterday's campus mail brought a fancy-looking invitation from the Chancellor and Provost to attend an "academic service recognition" luncheon. Glancing it over, I couldn't figure out why I got it. It said the luncheon was to honor this year's retirees and "academic employees completing 10, 20, 30, or 40 years of service." Did one of my long-serving colleagues request my presence? Was somebody I knew retiring? Then it hit me.

I have been here 10 years. The invitation is to honor people. like. me. As Rachel Maddow likes to say, "Eek!"

I guess time flies when you work with great people...
